How Old Are Your Ducts?
Ducts are typically made of sheet metal or flexible, insulated material (see image of both below). Over the years your ducts can actually experience quite a lot of wear and tear. Typically, if you ducts have been installed longer than 10 to 12 years ago, there’s a high chance they might need to be replaced.
Ducts that are much older (or more stressed) will have weakened insulation due to material wear, might contain asbestos which is extremely dangerous for your respiratory system, and older ducts are more likely to be damaged over time. In addition, leaky ducts can reduce heating and cooling system’s efficiency by as much as 20 percent, which can accumulate to a hefty sum in electricity bills, and you won’t even know it.
Also, depending on the age of your home, your air ducts might be starting to fall apart on their own, simply because of their limited life span.
When You Should Have Your Ducts Checked?
If you are experiencing loss of heat or your HVAC system seems to be working harder than it should, we recommend having your ducts looked at.
